Our Insurance Works Partner

From October 5, Sensus Insurance will become Tallan Group.

Since our initial inception as an insurance works builder more than a decade ago, Sensus Building Group has gone from strength to strength diversifying across retirement living and aged care, education works and council maintenance.

We are delighted to announce that from Oct. 5, 2021, our insurance business will be exclusively managed by Tallan Group, our new insurance works arm.

“Sensus Building Group’s decision to rebrand its insurance business to Tallan crystallises our insurance strategy of focusing on the provision of an exclusive, dedicated team of professionals who live and breathe your insurance repairs,” says Founder and Managing Director, Zane Taylor.

Tallan will continue the professional, prompt, and practical insurance service our clients have experienced with Sensus over the last 11 years.

Tallan will continue to utilise the support, trade base and expertise that Sensus Building Group has accumulated.

“We are excited about the future and look forward to continuing to partner with our clients across Sensus and Tallan to deliver exceptional results,” says Zane.

Sensus Project Manager, James Lee

Meet Sensus Building Group’s Sunshine Coast Project Manager, James Lee.

Next time you visit a Sensus Sunshine Coast site you’re bound to bump into our experienced project manager and resident Irishman, James Lee.

James has been with the business for the past eight years and has managed construction builds across the region. On any given day you can find him on Sensus sites across Noosa, Buderim, Caboolture and even out in regional Queensland.

“The lads build and construct a diverse array of projects for our clients. During the past few months, we’ve seen Independent Living Units in Buderim, council maintenance upgrades in Nambour and large-scale Catholic school works in Gympie,” says James.

“I’m often busy visiting our tradies and trusted local sub-contractors on sites across the Sunshine Coast. No matter what site I visit, I always know that our team pride themselves on delivering to the highest standards.”

Before joining the business, James ran a successful construction company in Ireland.

“I built houses from the ground up in Ireland – transforming vacant lots into turn keys homes,” says James. “We also renovated residential works, extensive council maintenance jobs and historic buildings. A highlight was transforming a former orphanage into residential living.”

And the main difference between construction projects in Australia and Ireland? The weather!

“Here in Australia, we usually have clear skies to complete exterior works. But back in Ireland there were times we would have to delay projects by two, three weeks because of the rain,” says James.

A carpenter by trade and project manager by heart, James also worked on large scale projects in Sydney, including The Star Casino, before moving back to Ireland, and then settling on the Sunshine Coast with his family in 2013.

“My wife Lorraine and I have three children so it’s important to me to work for a company that values flexibility,” says James. “Our leadership team is supportive of the lads and I maintaining a work life balance. Before Covid, I was able to take a few weeks off every now and again to take the family back to Ireland.”

And while another trip to Ireland may be a while off, James is looking forward to the exciting future projects on the horizon at Sensus.

National Safe Work Month

This year health and safety has come to the forefront like never before.

Here at Sensus Building Group we have always taken workplace health and safety incredibly seriously. That’s why we are big believers in participating in Safe Work Month – a yearly opportunity to reflect and recognize the importance of working safely.

This year Safe Work Month’s theme is, “Work Health and Safety through COVID-19,” acknowledging and reflecting upon the wide-reaching impacts of the pandemic.

WHS Officer & Client Relations Manager, Deirdre Wakefield is committed to championing a safe working culture..

Sensus was quick to review our policies and procedures back in March to ensure WHS risks from Covid were reduced for our employees and our clients.

“Safety is our number one priority. The safety of our employees, our clients and our community,” says WHS Officer & Client Relations Manager, Deirdre Wakefield. “We are privileged to work with and around a wide range of community members. We take that responsibility incredibly seriously.”

To help stop the spread of Covid-19 Sensus has implemented increased safety measures for both site and office-based employees.

Safety initiatives include:

  • Increased hygienic measures including sanitizing hands upon arrival
  • Flu vaccination required for all site employees
  • Adhering to social distancing at all times
  • Zero contact with aged care and retirement living residents
  • Mask wearing where social distancing is not possible
  • Temperature checks for all employees and sub-contractors at high risk sites
  • All sub-contractors have covid-19 safe work measure statements
  • Office employees encouraged to work from home

When travel between QLD and NSW became restricted Sensus quickly tapped into our team of local construction experts who could operate within cross-border bubbles. This nimble thinking allowed jobs to progress on time and budget.

The Sensus team closely monitors government announcements and updates our policies and procedures in-line with best practice.

“By keeping the lines of communication open with our teams and clients, we’re doing everything we can to keep our valued stakeholders safe,” says Deirdre. “Safety is our number priority.”

Meet Sensus Employee: Adrian Borleis

At Sensus we believe our team members are our greatest asset. That’s why over the next few months we look forward to introducing you to the people who are working hard on our construction projects.

This week we’d like to introduce Adrian Borleis. A carpenter by trade, Adrian is an all-around construction expert and is known for his meticulous attention to detail.

Adrian has been with the company since the beginning.

“When I started at Sensus we were primarily an insurance business,” says Adrian. “People’s houses were devastated by cyclones and severe flooding. It meant a lot to them that Sensus was a builder that cared about delivering a quality product.”

While the business has grown over time, Adrian says Sensus’ values have remained the same.

“They’ve always looked after me,” says Adrian. “They are big supporters of workplace flexibility. I’ve always had interesting jobs to do across our sites.”

For Adrian, no two days are ever the same and that is what he enjoys.

“From council works to retirement living villages I believe in going above and beyond for our clients,” says Adrian. ““I believe in doing a nice job to make our client’s happy.”

R U Ok? Day

Sensus CEO, Sean Kenny discusses how four simple steps could make all the difference to a work mate’s mental health.

At Sensus we believe in delivering an excellent product for our customers every time, but we can only deliver our very best if we look after our mental health.

“Living in our new ‘Covid safe normal’ environment it has never been more important to check in with colleagues and ask if they are ok,” says Sensus CEO, Sean Kenny.  “Today is R U OK? Day. It is an opportunity to take a moment to raise awareness about mental health and support those that are struggling.”

You don’t need to be an expert to reach out – just a good work mate and a great listener.

These four simple steps could make all the difference.

  1. Ask R U OK?
  2. Listen
  3. Encourage action
  4. Check in

Mental health awareness does not end today. If you suspect a colleague is out of sorts throughout the year just follow the four simple steps above. This video is also an excellent resource if you’re looking for guidance on how to start the conservation.

R U Ok? Day is also chance to reflect on your own mental health and make sure you’re looking after yourself. What healthy habits do you have to unwind?

“I enjoy spending time with my family,” says Sean. “We often take our dog to our local beach. It is a way to get some exercise and unwind while reflecting on work matters.”

“By looking after each other we will continue to make Sensus a great place to work.”

Looking Out for Those in Need

A hot simple meal. It is something most of us look forward to at the end of day. Yet for many elderly Queenslanders cooking a hot meal is no longer an easy task to accomplish.

That is where Meals on Wheels come in. For decades they have been delivering nutritious meals to Queenslanders in need. Along with their delicious dishes volunteers connect and socialize with elderly residents who may be unable to leave their homes.

“At Sensus we believe in giving back to the communities in which we live and operate,” says Sensus CEO, Sean Kenny. “We were happy to donate $1,500 to Meals on Wheels. This will provide meals to an elderly Queenslander for more than 20 weeks.”

Our team often sees the Meals on Wheels representatives at retirement living villages where we are conducting renovations. We have seen firsthand the important work that these volunteers do.

“Creating an inclusive community has never been more important – especially in 2020,” says Sean. “We believe in creating respectful environments for the elderly and Meals on Wheels is an important part of that.”

You can find out more about the important work that Meals on Wheels do here.
