One of the most exciting elements of working in construction is the opportunity to transform the environment around us.

The Sensus team of design and construction experts recently collaborated with our aged care client to maxmise an existing multi-purpose room by creating a quiet religious sanctuary.

“We worked with our Moreton Bay aged care client to create a flexible space,” says Sensus Project Manager, James Lee. “A stand-alone worship centre for residents and their families while maintaining the flexibility to transform the room back into its original size when required.”

To achieve this, the Sensus team proposed the installation of a large operable wall that would go through the middle of the 15m x 9m room.

The only issue was the roof needed additional support to hold up the wall.

“To reinforce the existing roof structure our team carefully installed a steel beam, almost 9 metres long, that will hold up the new operable wall in between the worship area and the rest of the room,” says James.

In addition to building considerations, our tradespeople always also consider the ‘human element’ while on site. As an experienced aged care builder, our team know that residents still need to utilise connecting entrances and corridors.

“For the resident’s safety and ease of use, our tradies put up a temporary partition to seal off the construction site. This allowed aged care residents and their families to access primary throughfares with minimal disruptions,” says James.

Once the beam was installed the team moved on to the next stage of the internal works. This included installing 30 all new LED downlights, 8 energy efficient fans and carpet tiles throughout.

In the worship area, Sensus’ handpicked sub-contractor Brisbane Custom Cabinets created bespoke cabinetry for the worship area. While our stonemasons delivered the alter stonework two weeks ahead of time.

“Residents will now have the opportunity to utilise both the newly created worship centre and their multi-purpose room,” says James. “We are pleased to have collaborated with our client to deliver a renovation that has completely transformed this space.”

Regional QLD Aged Care Works Wheelchair Ramps Bathroom Bedroom Renovation Construction

The Sensus team of aged care construction experts have been busy out west. From Chinchilla to Nanango renovations have been taking place to enhance facilities for regional aged care residents.

Upgrading Aged Care Facility Wheelchair Ramps

Spending time in the outdoors is now easier for residents at a Chinchilla aged care community. The Sensus team have transformed the centre’s two wheelchair ramps allowing safe and easy access to their much-loved vegetable garden.

“Our in-house team of construction experts did everything from pouring concrete, exacting carpentry to meticulous painting,” says Sensus Project Manager, James Lee.  “By having a trusted team, our client could rest easy knowing that the Sensus employees on site had the necessary flu shots and background requirements.”

The team completely replaced the first ramp with all new timber. While the second ramp was a new build using a combination of timber and concrete elements.

The wheelchair access ramps were also varnished with anti-slip sealant to make the space even safer for those walking down the area.

In a matter of weeks they had installed new vinyl flooring in the bedrooms, custom wardrobe inserts and zero transition flooring in the bathrooms.

Aged Care Commercial Kitchen

The renovated aged care commercial kitchen is gleaming.

Nestled in the beautiful Moreton Bay Region, the caring and supportive aged care facility contracted Sensus to create a stand-out kitchen that could prepare delicious and nutritious meals for their residents in a safe, efficient, and thoughtfully designed environment.

“We pride ourselves on understanding our client’s needs and working together to find innovative solutions,” says Sensus CEO, Sean Kenny. “By approaching each project as a unique opportunity, coupled with our deep industry experience, the Sensus team designs and constructs projects that exceed expectations.”

Stainless steel range hoods with extractors were installed for fresh air supply.

Sensus Project Manager, Joel Quillan worked closely with our client to completely transform the aged care facility’s kitchen.

“By carefully designing the layout with under bench appliances, the aged care kitchen team now have more space to prepare food,” says Joel. “We also installed the latest auto-sliders allowing hands-free access for food trolleys to be delivered to residents.”

Always keeping our client’s needs top of mind, Sensus organised for a mobile commercial kitchen to run on-site seven days a week, ensuring residents could still receive freshly prepared meals while renovations were underway.

Covid Safe Aged Care Construction

When the pandemic took hold in March, Sensus acted quickly to implement enhanced safety measures to protect our valued stakeholders.

Our leadership team reviewed our already robust safety systems to include heightened requirements that would further protect our employees and clients from Covid-19. The team proactively implemented these increased health and safety measurements at our sites across Queensland and Northern NSW.

Nanango Aged Care Refurbishment Safety

Covid-safe measures are particularly important at our aged care and retirement living sites. Stringent safety standards are implemented across all of our business units – even on larger scale works like multi-room aged care facility renovations in regional Queensland.

“Every Sensus employee and sub-contractor must follow specific safety steps when they arrive on site,” says Project Manager, Joel Quillan. “Wearing masks, using hand sanitizer and temperature checks are how we start each shift. Every step is an important part of working Covid-safe.”

A consistent safety approach is paramount to renovating the building’s 18 rooms, en-suites and common area. The safety measures also apply to sub-contractors who must follow stringent safety requirements and provide a Covid-19 safe work measure statement.

Innovation Thinking Keeping our Clients’ Safe

Sensus considers the overall health of our clients and is committed to minimising disturbance to residents where possible. On this site, our team thought outside of the box to figure out how to keep dust away from existing residents’ rooms. They determined a protective dust zip-wall would seal off the construction zone.

“The specialty dust screens utilise plastic sheeting with poles to completely separate the residents from the construction dust,” says Sensus Project Manager, Joel Quillan. “We’ve received excellent feedback that the living areas are dust free. Not a small task when rooms are on the other side of the construction zone.”

Our team of renovation experts implemented increased health measures to safely complete two Brisbane Aged Care facility room upgrades.

Two adjacent Aged Care room renovations were nearly finished when Australia began ramping up its Covid-safe procedures.

“We worked closely with our client to ensure we could deliver an excellent product in the safest possible way,” says Project Manager, Michael Taylor.

Sensus monitored government regulations and collaborated with our client, adhering to the facility’s specific procedures.

“In addition to the Australia-wide measures, we listened closely to our client to met additional health and safety requirements for their specific facility,” says Michael. “This included using a dedicated path in-and-out of the building, utilising a particular lift, avoiding contact with residents and using alcohol-based hand sanitizer.”

Our team of building experts worked efficiently to safely complete the renovation.

“I want to thank our tradespeople for their continued dedication to producing quality work,” says Michael. “Even when we needed to increase our SHE measures; the team’s commitment was second-to-none. They worked diligently to proudly deliver an excellent result for our client.”

By working safely, the team delivered another rewarding renovation.

Renovation Highlights Include:

  • New wall linings

Regional Aged Care Renovations

The Sensus team are excited to be back in the bush for another stunning aged care unit renovation.

As the rolling hills of the South Burnett Region came into view Sensus Project Manager, James Lee was looking forward to partnering with our valued client on another fantastic construction project.

“We are proud to bring our unparalleled experience completing building works within age care communities,” says James. “We understand the delicate nature of working with the elderly and tailor our jobs around their needs – including scheduling works at later hours and giving nursing staff ample notice before any services (like water or electricity) are cut.”

Considering the recent Covid-19 virus Sensus are taking extra precautions to protect aged care residents.

“All team members sign a daily form stating they are well and must use anti-bacterial wash/ sanitize their hands before entering site,” says James. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to make sure we minimise the risk to the most vulnerable in our communities.”

For James, the best part about working in an aged care facility is having the chance to connect with those that call it home. “By just saying g’day and having a chat with a resident can make both of our days,” he says.

The team are proud to build to the platinum livability standard and create a comfortable living environment.

“The unit we are currently renovating will feature anti-slip vinyl flooring, LED lighting and bathroom grab rails for enhanced safety,” says James.

Working in regional communities is also a fantastic opportunity to partner with regional experts. On this job we are delighted to work with Kingaroy company Wards Electrical.

“We engage as many local tradies as possible because of their home-grown expertise,” says James. “We also support the local economy by staying in regional hotels – who are always very good us. We’re big supporters of buying from the bush.”

As the team gets under way renovating the current unit, here are a few sneak peaks from a recently completed unit in the same community. The excellent craftsmanship speaks for itself.
